Reflection

I  apply to the course to change something in my life and finally start learning. I have always known that I have the potential to do something with my life. My motivation to join this course was my love of drawing that started when I was a child. I was hoping to learn a lot and I definitely did, even more than I expected. The course was demanding and challenged me every step of the way. My knowledge of different illustrators grew as I had to research quite a few. Some of them were inspirational discoveries, especially the young modern female illustrators, but unfortunately there was not enough information about them for me to be able to share with everybody.  There were also many practical skills that I come by during the course. I have learned how to use Flipsnack to create online flipbooks and Milanote to make visual boards of my ideas. It has taught me how to design my website, how to write a blog or create my own logo. Even though I have only been on the course for a couple of mon

Artist research - Randolf Caldecott

For my illustrator research I chose Randolf Caldecott. He was born in 1846 in England and his love of horse-riding gave him a lot of opportunity create drawings which he later used as inspiration. His firs drawings were published in Illustrated London News in 1861 when he wrote an account of the fire and added his own illustrations to it. As an adult he pursued artistic interests by attending Manchester School of Arts, he publishe his illustrations in newspapers while working for a bank and had his picture hung in The Royal Manchester Institute. He resigned from banking and moved to London to devote his full attention to art where he became a successful magazine illustrator. In 1878 he published his first children’s book which proved to be a great success and he continued to do so until he died. His style was partly a result of him not wanting to replicate the style of his contemporary, Walter Crane whose work was decoratve and flowery. His own work was consider to have much more mov

Artist research - Michael Martchenko - Canadian illustrator

Michael Martchenko was born in 1942 in Carcassone, France and, as a boy, became interested in comic books and cartoons. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Canada where he attended Ontario College of Arts in 1966. While working as a creative director at an advertising company, he was noticed and approached by an author of children's books, Robert Munsch and his publishing house. The two artists quickly found out that they have a lot in common and their fruitfull partnership was born. It can first be appreciated in  The Paper Bag  published in 1980. Ten years later, Martchenko published his own children's book,  Birdfeeder Banquet , wich was well accepted by the critics and often compared to his earlier works with Munsch.  His work was described as full of humour and panache. Within the same decade, he began working with Allen Morgan on his series about nighttime escapades of a young boy, again gaining the approval of the critics who said his illustrations were ener
