Initial Artists Research - Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse
The artist was born in 1869 in La Cateau-Cambresis, France and died on 3 November 1954. He is considered to be a master of the use of colour and expression. His name is mentioned together with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp when the developments in 20th-century art are discussed. First, he trained to become a lawyer and his artistic career became only when his mother bought him art supplies when he was ill. Since that moment, Henri decided to become an artist. Matisse went to the Academie Julian and became friends with John Russell who changed the way Henri worked with colour. He was a printmaker, sculptor but is mostly famous for his paintings. Henri Matisse used predominantly bright colours after he had been introduced to Impressionism and the works of Vincent Van Gogh. The main characteristics of artwork by Henri Matisse are expressive colours, flat shapes and controlled lines. The artist was part of the neo-Impressionist movement and one of the leaders of an artist group called ‘Fauves’. He used wild unnatural colour combinations and huge contrasts of primitive colours. In 1910, after he had seen an Islamic art exhibition, was so influenced by the colours that he had seen that his own painting became more extravagant and rich in colour. The pieces of work that I was most impressed with were The Dessert: Harmony in Red, the Cat with the Red Fish and The Two young Women, The Yellow dress and The Scottish Dress. The three paintings are painted with the use of reds, yellows, greens and blues, which according to the colour theory are primary colours. The artist used strong flat colours with bold outlines and, in my view, his intense palette can also be applied in Graphic Design, which is my progression. I also enjoy creating a flat designs where the characters and objects have only one dimension. As in Henri’s work, I want to draw attention to my project by the use of bold, vivid, vibrant, positive colours to add joy and happiness to my project.

Quite a strange post! Firstly, the title says this is about Matisse, but you don't analyse the his work in any depth. Then you include several other artists that should really be in a series of research posts. You should really analyse this work and discuss why you are including it in this post. Why these illustrators? Do you think they are linked to his work stylistically or are they illustrators that you are interested in and want to link them to your work? More clarity please!
