Artist research - Frank Wagtmans

Frank Wagtmans is a dutch painter who has a passion for portraying South Asian people. I have chosen to research this artist because of his talent for painting Asian cultures for example Japanese Geisha and Indian Brides. His exotic artwork is eye-catching, detailed high contrast painted with rich colours. He paints large portraits on canvas using glossy metallic paint, gems that add shine ....
He uses shadow and value to sculpt faces.
he applies different techniques and materials, adding pieces of fabric and texture. His paintings have many layers. he uses bright, vivid colours. His creations are based on a photograph. His first step is to make a sketch on the canvas after that he chooses a colour pallet and paints layer-by-layer. Because he paints with acrylic, he has to work quickly using a flat brush.

  1. I can see why you chose Wagtmans, but can you make stronger links to your own work? In terms of theme? It seems you have looked for an artist with an 'oriental' idea and chosen him to link to your project. There are plenty of illustrators you could choose, that work on children's books or work in the eastern market that would be more relevant.
