Development Exercise: Tell Me A Story!
DAUGHTER OF THE CHINESE KING AND HER PROTECTIVE DRAGON .
Once upon a time, behind six hills and five fields, there lived a King and Queen with their small daughter called Mairag, her name meaning Beautiful and well-bred, her second name was Yulan which means magnolia flower.
One day the girl decided to play in the yard at the front of the Palace, she asked her mother and father to play with her, but they were busy and didn’t have time to play with the girl.
“You have dolls to accompany you”, said Dad.
“I wish my grandparents were here, they never say they do not have time, Maybe I should visit them now” she thought.
Without saying anything Mairag went on her way to see her grandparents. She walked happily through the forest for some time, however the road seemed longer than usual. She walked for what felt like an age, the road seemed like it could go on forever. Finally she tired and sat down under a tree to rest a while.
“Today the forest seems bigger” she thought, the trees rustled differently seeming ominous and eerie.
“Are you lost?” a mysterious voice boomed.
Mairag raised her head and saw a large dragon watching her with concern.
“You can go riding on my back” said the dragon and sat down so that Mairag could climb on. He ran slowly at first, then faster until he was running so fast that to Mairag the forest seemed just a blur, then he soared into the sky, off towards the house of Mairag’s grandparents.
Everyone in the city below stopped stunned in surprise and delight at the sight of Mairag sitting on the back of a giant but friendly dragon.
Soon her grandparents house was in front of them.
“Over there” cried Mairag.
The dragon swooped down and landed on the hard ground below.
Startled by the loud noise Mairags grandparents came running outside.
They were surprised to see the little girl jumping off the enormous dragons back.
“Come inside, have a glass of juice” they cried happily.
The dragon preferred to stay in the garden, a good thing as he was just too big to get through the door, he drank his juice quickly of course.
“It's time to say goodbye, thank you for the pleasant reception and the lovely juice” bellowed the Dragon.
Grandfather asked Mairag if her parents knew that she had gone so far alone, when they found out that she had not told her parents if she could go alone, he decided to take her home for a lovely walk together.
They came to the house, inside smelled like dinner.
“Please, come to the table – called mum” who had prepared a meal and did not even notice Mairags absence.
After dinner was eaten the fun began everybody went outside to play ball together.
This works well, you have created a believable (but fantastical) world. I could see this being the basis of a series of illustrations with a longer form book - perhaps you could think of adding other chapters or maybe your project could be the outline for a longer book?
