Considering my work and the real work

In this post I will explain how the work I am doing this term can exist and inspire the real world also I will answer on questions down below.
What influence could your project have in the real world?
Will your project show a point of view or show something that might make people think differently?
How else does your work have influence?
Why is it important?

What influence could your project have in the real world?

My project is an illustrated book for children telling a story of a little girl and a
friendly dragon. Firstly, the idea to introduce a dragon as a friendly creature might
change the way children see these mythical animals, which in the European culture
are viewed as dangerous and cruel. The story challenges the traditional storyline
where the princess is held captive and guarded by the dragon which needs to be killed.

Will your project show a point of view or show something that might make people think differently?

The introduction of a friendly dragon is an early sign for the children that not all cultural concepts and stereotypes are true and need to be obeyed. If the children develop positive attitude towards a creature that is seemingly dangerous, but turns out to be friendly, they might have their first lesson in questioning the assumptions that people have and become more open and inquisitive adults.

How else does your work have influence?

Another influence that I am hoping my project might have is that it will introduce a protagonist that are more inclusive. The main character of the story is a girl of Asian origin, but the book is intended for children of all backgrounds who will simply appreciate the adventure.

Why is it important?

I think it is important for illustrators of all origins to be culturally sensitive, open and try to introduce variety of characters and backgrounds. I have observed doing research for the book, that these are mostly Asian authors and illustrators, who create children's books with Asian characters. My impression is that the books are mostly intended for Asian readers who would identify with the characters and the stories. My hope is that if more culturally diverse authors tried to introduce more culturally varied protagonists and storylines, children of all origins would develop more cultural sensitivity, awareness, understanding and tolerance.

  1. Last term we talked about being smarter with your posts - if there is something you are not sure about, talk about your idea with me or another member of your group. Leaving a post like this unfinished and unedited makes me wonder if you are going to remember to finish it!
