Further research & the direction of my project

How has my research, so far, informed my project?

How useful has my research been?

What further research will I carry out next to build on previous research?

How will the further research inform my work?

So far I have researched 3 artists : Alina Chau, Frank wagtmans, Katsuya terra Terada. Alina Chau inspired me because of her colourful illustrations. She is known for illustrating children’s books. The main character of her books is a small Asian girl. Looking at her illustrations I decided to create a book with similar protagonist describing adventures of a little Asian girl which will be complemented with Oriental elements.

The research of Frank Waltman’s helped me to understand how oriental couture is perceived by non-Asian artist.

His art made me realize that I do not want to portray character in the stereotypical manner but I prefer draw modern type of girl and add some oriental elements. His paintings are elaborate in colour and form but depict traditional outlook on oriental couture.

I have also researched the differences between Chinese and European children’s stories to ensure I represent the couture the best I can.

I learn that Chinese stories focus more on the main character helping friend, family or the social circle and that conveying moral values Is important.

I also considered it necessary to learn about creating an illustrated story for children in general. The research thought me the basic procedure that the illustrator needs to fallow in order to achieve coherent result. The most important aspects are developing the character that will speak to the child and designing the storyboard to tell the story well.

I am planning to read about Chinese symbols and characters, especially the dragon who features in my story and research Chinese landscape and architecture in illustrations.
