Glossary of Terms


Glossary terms of book:

Paste- down  is the portion of the endpaper that is glued to the inner boards of a hardback book. The paste-down forms an essential part of a book's structure, and along with the exterior binding of the book, comprises the hinge of the book's cover.

(in bookbinding) the part of an endpaper which is pasted to the inside of the cover.

Inner Hinge in book - The inside portion of the flexible are where book cover meets the book spine

Spread- Two adjacent pages in a book. They may contain separate bits of content, or one full bleed illustration

endpapers - also knows as bedsheets are the pages that consist of a double - size sheet folded with one half pasted against an inside cover ( the pastedown) and the other serving as the first free page ( the free endpaper or flyleaf)

free endpaper in book - first page of a book and is part of a single sheet that also spans across the inside of the front board

Bookblock or text block - all the leaves in a book on which the text is written or printed

Headband or endband - an end band along the top edge of the book ( as a book is standing upright) is called a headband

Imprint page it is a page at the start of a book which details the publisher's imprint and copyright information

hinge or joint of book- the inside portion of the flexible area where book cover meets the book spine

Perfect Bound is a type of soft cover book binding where adhesive is used to hold the cover and pages together

Signatures: are stack of two or more pieces of paper which are folded and grounded together ready for sewing. Each of the signatures are bound together individually and later bound together as a whole forming the textbook 

Leaves: two pages of book ( 1 sheet ) is referred to as a leaf

Narrative devices it is a common technique used by the author and illustrator, to tell a story. These can include: action, conflict, humour, symbolism, environment, perspective and character development


Royalties - the sum paid to the illustrator and author for each copy of the book sold

Font it is a collection of typed characters with a similar design

PPI - pixel per inch

DPI - dots per inch

Saturation - it is the intensity of colour


RGB - red, green and blue 3-colours used for images on a digital screen




CMYK- printing proces of 4-colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and black

Pantone - it is a company which is known as professional colour system

opacity - non - transparency , The lower opacity, the more transparent an element is

GIF - Graphic Interchance Format

TIFF - Tagged Image File Format
