Grace Lin - author and illustrator of children books

Grace Lin is a prolific, talented and accomplished author and illustrator. She lives in Florence, Ma with her husband and daughter but she grew up in Upstate New York. As a child she wanted to become champion ice skater. She started drawing herself skating which was beginning of her career as an illustrator.

In her illustrations, talks, articles and podcasts, she is a strong advocate for diversity and draws our attention to the fact that the book that whole generations had been raised at were very narrow in their representation of the world. She said that ' books erase bias, they make the uncommon everyday, and the mundane exotic'. Her approach to writing gave me encouragement when I started doubting whether an illustrator of White origin will ever be sensitive enough to portray characters from unfamiliar background. But as her work often refers to universal truths, feelings and emotions, I felt empowered to do the same.

Her illustration style has also an influence on the final presentation of the characters in my book. She uses bright colourful gouache and defined shapes.

Grace Lin published her first picture book in 1999 named: The Ugly Vegetables. She was nominated for the California Young Reader Children's Choice Award and named a Growing Good Kids Book Award Classic.

  1. I am glad that this artist lives in Upstate New York, but what does that have to do with your project?
