Project Title: Book Illustration

Project Aims and Objectives:

 

I am planning to create a book of 4-7 pages (A4 size) with colourful illustrations for teenage girls about fashion design. Each page will have a theme based on one of the four seasons and the essentials for that season. I want to create an inclusive book that represents girls from different ethnic backgrounds and abilities. I will design a front and back cover and include a colouring page at the end of the book.

 

I will mainly use Procreate to draw my illustrations but I would also like to explore Photoshop and Illustrator and will create some small practise pieces to further improve my digital skills. I will use Flipsnack to create a Digital Flipbook and embed this on my portfolio with a clear title and introduction to the work. I will create a project plan and add this to my blog and aim to complete my project by the beginning of December .

Artist research - Michael Martchenko - Canadian illustrator

Michael Martchenko was born in 1942 in Carcassone, France and, as a boy, became interested in comic books and cartoons. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Canada where he attended Ontario College of Arts in 1966. While working as a creative director at an advertising company, he was noticed and approached by an author of children's books, Robert Munsch and his publishing house. The two artists quickly found out that they have a lot in common and their fruitfull partnership was born. It can first be appreciated in  The Paper Bag  published in 1980. Ten years later, Martchenko published his own children's book,  Birdfeeder Banquet , wich was well accepted by the critics and often compared to his earlier works with Munsch.  His work was described as full of humour and panache. Within the same decade, he began working with Allen Morgan on his series about nighttime escapades of a young boy, again gaining the approval of the critics who said his illustration...

I Hate Art - Angry Dog - Edvard Munch

Angry Dog is a painting by Edvard Munch painted in 1938-43 the painting shows a big black angry dog with the tongue hanging out. The dog is standing outside in the grass and there are birch trees behind it. the dog is looking at the viewer clearly angry. We can only see the front half of its body. This painting ia a story between Edward and his neigbours dog. The painting is carelessly painted as if by a child. I do not like the fact that the brushstrokes are thick,  defined because it makes the painting seem unfinished unflatering without any techniques and skill. The paint is smeared on the canvas which has many visible blank spaces.  For me, the painting should be more realistic and precise with many details. I am not a fan of abstract composition.
