Developing Skills and Knowledge: drawing face




 How I studied drawing face by using basic guidelines proportions? 

I started by preparing equipment such as: pencils, eraser, sharpener and sketchbook. I learned that facial proportions are not the same for everybody but depending on how person which we are drawing looks like. Face shows expressions and emotion for example joy, surprise, sadness, anger, fear.


Firstly I draw an upside-down egg shape and I divided head in half vertically and horizontally



after I divided under horizontal line on 3 parts ( line between eyes and chin)
first line it is a bottom of the nose 
second line it is bottom of lower lip
third line it is a chin



usually earlobes line up with the bottom of the nose but top of ears are line up with eyebrows


Eyes are about one eye-width apart (we can fit five eye-width across the face)
wide of the nose should line up with the corner of the eyes

    This is a really good effort, but in the session I directed you to the storyboarding presentation. Please have a go at that one as well - I think the idea of a narrative is important as a Graphic Designer/Illustrator and also looking at composition is a vital part of your work. However, you worked well on this task and there is an ongoing improvement in your drawing abilities.

Artist research - Michael Martchenko - Canadian illustrator

Michael Martchenko was born in 1942 in Carcassone, France and, as a boy, became interested in comic books and cartoons. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Canada where he attended Ontario College of Arts in 1966. While working as a creative director at an advertising company, he was noticed and approached by an author of children's books, Robert Munsch and his publishing house. The two artists quickly found out that they have a lot in common and their fruitfull partnership was born. It can first be appreciated in  The Paper Bag  published in 1980. Ten years later, Martchenko published his own children's book,  Birdfeeder Banquet , wich was well accepted by the critics and often compared to his earlier works with Munsch.  His work was described as full of humour and panache. I Hate Art - Angry Dog - Edvard Munch

Angry Dog is a painting by Edvard Munch painted in 1938-43 the painting shows a big black angry dog with the tongue hanging out. The dog is standing outside in the grass and there are birch trees behind it. the dog is looking at the viewer clearly angry. We can only see the front half of its body. This painting ia a story between Edward and his neigbours dog. The painting is carelessly painted as if by a child. I do not like the fact that the brushstrokes are thick,  defined because it makes the painting seem unfinished unflatering without any techniques and skill. The paint is smeared on the canvas which has many visible blank spaces.  For me, the painting should be more realistic and precise with many details. I am not a fan of abstract composition.
