Developing Skills and Knowledge: Life Drawing Sessions
Yesterday and Today I experienced something new. It was the first time when I was asked to draw naked people. First I drew a man. He was standing close to me and posing. My first reaction was to avert my eyes because I felt shy and uncomfortable. My feelings deconcentrated and distracted me because I hadn't seen naked strangers before so I couldn't draw the act even the tutor noticed that I didn't want to look at the nude person and told me to do it. The model seemed comfortable and indifferent. When I was drawing the woman I felt more confident. When I reflect on my drawings I see that it is difficult for me to draw anatomical details. My work is unsatisfactory and think I should learn human anatomy a bit.
First day we used pencils which I learned to sharpen from Suzi. I borrower a knife and sharpened them to make them last longer. From now I am planning to use this method. On the second day we were asked to draw using fine liners in different thicknesses and liquid black ink. I find the ink difficult to work with because you have to have clear plan what to draw since this medium is difficult to correct.
First day - using pencil
There was a definite improvement in terms of how you used the mediums over the two days and how you created tone and structure in your drawings. In some ways the initial continuous line warm up drawings are the best and more spontaneous, but the drawing of Alison facing you is also much better. Your ability to draw proportion was also improving as the sessions went along. This was a good effort for someone that has never drawn from life before. You seemed to grow in confidence despite your obvious nervousness about drawing from the life model. Try out the online tutorial I gave you during the final session of Week 5 for further practise.
